Event Details

Guide:

Dan Fass is a keen historian of the Gibby's Field area. He has worked hard along with local citizens to preserve Gibby's Field as a community greenspace.

Special Instructions:

Wear walking shoes. Walk is child and bike-friendly. Rain or shine. Suggested donations of $5 - $10 welcome.

Description:

Dan will retrace some of the path of Gibson Creek, a major creek in the once-vast China Creek system which used to flow into False Creek, He will show where three other creeks joined Gibson Creek to eventually become China Creek. Gibson Creek provided waters for Chinese market gardens and a brewery. Its trout provided lunch for the owner of a drugstore built over the creek and its salmon fed the mink in a mink farm. Along its path is Gibby's Field - three city lots named after "Old Man Gibby" - the name local children gave to Moses Gibson, after whom "Gibson's Creek" is also named. Gibby's Field, which has never been developed, contains the original creek bed. Local  citizens are working to keep it as a greenspace (www.vcn.bc.ca/gibbys). It will take about a half hour to walk back  to the start point.

NOTE: We are a Non-Profit Society who is happy to give our volunteer time for these very important historical walks. In the two previous years of walks, MANY OF THOSE WHO DID REGISTER NEVER CAME to the planned walk. Some had registered groups of 3 or 5 people each. As a result, others who registered later were disappointed because our quota had been reached. Also the historians who had worked hard to prepare their material only spoke to a small number of people.

We ask that you ONLY REGISTER IF THERE IS A VERY GOOD CHANCE YOU WILL BE JOINING US on that day. Please be respectful of the work the organizers and historians are putting into these events and follow these guidelines. We look forward to seeing you at our walks!
